Zonta International statement on events in Washington, DC

Zonta International is an organization founded on democratic principles, and for more than 100 years those principles have guided our membership in our service and advocacy efforts. We condemn the violence we witnessed in Washington, DC on 6 January and reject violence of any kind as a form of protest, both in this instance and in other instances and events around the world. Instead, we believe in the power of our collective advocacy to promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and the advancement of understanding, goodwill, and peace, as stated in our objects. It is through the democratic process and legislative action that we will continue to use our voices in pursuit of our mission and in support of women and girls everywhere.

Political and societal instability threaten progress and advancements for women and all underrepresented or marginalized people and underscore the need for organizations like Zonta International to bring people together for good.

We must move forward and work together as an inclusive and united Zonta International community with full respect for our democratic institutions, and we welcome others that share our commitment to equality. Our voices and actions make a difference.
