Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao supports pregnant women with nutrition event

On 23 July, the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao, Philippines, concluded its webinar entitled "Wastong Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay sa Breastfeeding Nakasalalay" via Zoom and aired on Facebook live. The club’s gracious and very knowledgeable speakers were Ms. Amalia Calubaquib, Nutritionist - Dietitian III, City Population Officer - Designate, of the City Government of Tuguegarao and Ms. Maria Gisela Matammu Lonzaga, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator of the National Nutrition Council, Regional Office II.

The club is aware that mothers tend to forget their needs or place them at the bottom of the priority list when taking care of the family.  The webinar's goal is to remind mothers and mothers-to-be that their own nutrition is as important as that of their families. Babies are only as strong and healthy as their breastfeeding mommies. A healthy mom means a healthy babe.

This event was held in support of National Nutrition Council Nutrition Month Celebration 2021, with the Theme: "Malnutrisyon patuloy na labanan, First 1000 days tutukan!". The club initially planned to invite indigent pregnant and lactating women to attend the webinar, so they were pleasantly surprised when 300 pregnant and lactating women from all walks of life, hailing from 47 barangays of Tuguegarao City, joined.

Prizes were given to attendees who joined the Best Breastfeeding Mother and Child Photo Contest during the webinar. The lucky winners received digital blood pressure monitors, nebulizer compressors, manual breast pumps and baskets with bread, veggies and vitamins. Malunggay vitamins and nutribaskets were also given to around 40 barangays for selected indigent recipients through their barangay health workers.

The club would like to thank their generous sponsors for the prizes and giveaways. For those interested in learning more about proper nutrition for breastfeeding mothers, you are invited to watch the webinar at the club’s Facebook page.
