Zonta Club of Kowloon fights against domestic violence during COVID-19

The Harmony House Limited is the first non-governmental organization in Hong Kong committed to end domestic violence. The Zonta Club of Kowloon is working in close collaboration with the Harmony House to help the women in need during different stages of COVID-19.

During the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020, there was shortage of masks and hand sanitizer. Under the project “Care in Action 1.0”, the club donated care packs for families of a local women’s shelter. Members also collaborated with the other clubs of Area 2, District 17 to donate care packs for other families. The care packs included masks, hand sanitizer, toys and snack.

To enhance the relationships of families suffering from domestic violence during the local MidAutumn Festival in September 2020, the club implemented “Care in Action 2.0” and donated care packs of moon cake, supermarket coupons and other items.

The cases of domestic violence continued soaring and additional women shelters were acquired. The club’s “Care in Action 3.0 - Home Sweet Homes” project donated household appliance coupons each of HK$2,500 (around US$320) to subsidize the purchase of needy electrical appliances for these families.

In addition, members provided self-strengthening skills training, legal support, employment training, financial literacy, counselling service, peer and social support for rebuilding the confidence of women suffered during this period of hard time.
