Providing a safe technology space for women in need

The Women’s Community Aid Association and the Zonta Club of Brisbane Breakfast Inc, Australia, partnered for the project, Enhancing Connections: Resourcing Women to Get Online, to purchase new computers for the organization’s library space, as the existing systems were outdated.

The publicly accessible computers are essential for women to seek information and support, connect to services such as Centrelink, pursue online education, seek employment, search for accommodation, attend to immigration matters, and connect with family and friends. Women can also print documents for free.

A US$2,541 grant from Zonta International provided five new computers equipped with internet and printing facilities. The new equipment brought more users to the library, helping women to access information, study, print documents, and connect to services such as Department of Housing, Centrelink and Medicare. In the 2018-2019 fiscal year, Women’s Community Aid Association provided support to 245 women through its domestic violence assistance and sexual assault service programs. Unfortunately, the library temporarily closed due to COVID-19 but has since reopened.
