The Zonta Club of Fenton, USA, recently co-hosted its second annual Purses for Protection event with Sawyer Jewelers. The event raised more than US$9,100.
The Zonta club and Sawyer Jewelers collected donations of designer purses to auction. Attendees also purchased raffle tickets to enter to win prizes donated from local businesses. The event is run through the jewelry company's new foundation, Gem Charities. The money raised will be split between the YWCA's sexual assault crisis center and the Zonta club's teen dating violence program.
Mary Ann Beltinck, co-owner of Sawyer Jewelers spoke at the event about her experience as a domestic abuse survivor.
“I took the opportunity to let the girls here know that I am the number one. I am the number one out of four who experienced some sort of domestic violence in their life, whether it’s financial, emotional or physical, and I think a lot of people didn’t know that about me,” she said. “I have a lot of experience with it. It’s very close to my heart.”
