Through their Empower Women Scholarship Program, the Zonta Club of Makati & Environs, District 17, has been supporting local women in their pursuits of higher education for 10 years.
The scholarship program implemented by the club focuses on financially assisting young women who come from marginalized families and who wish to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields. To date, over 150 young women have been awarded the scholarship.
Club members say that in the Philippines, it can be difficult to receive a degree in a subject such as tertiary science education, especially for women. Finances are just one obstacle women must overcome. This is why the club decided to create the scholarship program.
The program focuses not only on academic development but career and personal development as well. Through the scholarship, the recipients are offered mentoring, workshops and advocacy.
To provide these extra opportunities, the Zonta club partnered with the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, funding partners, as well as a widely read women's magazine.
Each year, Zontians are able to see young women graduate fully equipped academically and with skills learned from the other avenues of the scholarship program.
