International Women’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on progress we have made, to call for change and to celebrate the women who have made a difference in their countries and communities.
The United Nations’ theme for International Women’s Day 2018 is “The Time Is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives.”
“Echoing the priority theme of the upcoming 62nd Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, International Women’s Day will also draw attention to the rights and activism of rural women, who make up over a quarter of the world population, and are being left behind in every measure of development,” the UN says in a statement.
Zonta recognizes International Women’s Day as our Zonta Rose Day, a day on which we encourage our members and supporters to make a donation to the Zonta International Foundation in honor or in memory of an influential and inspirational individual.
One hundred percent of donations to the Foundation are used to support projects and programs that help women achieve a life free of violence, and empower them to overcome gender barriers that hinder their access to health, education and professional advancement. Through Zonta and its partners, we are providing effective service to make lasting change for future generations of women and girls.
International Women’s Day is also a time to think about how best to advance the 2030 Agenda and effectively implement the Sustainable Development Goals—specifically Goal No. 5, “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls,” and Goal No. 4, “Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.”
Zonta International is working to achieve these goals with its global service projects, education programs that award outstanding women in their fields, the Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women campaign and the daily service and advocacy projects in which clubs and districts participate.
