The United Nations General Assembly declared 21 September as the International Day of Peace, a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
This year, the theme for the Day is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.”
Zonta International is a strong supporter of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which were unanimously adopted in September 2015 by the 193 Member States of the UN.
Each of the 17 goals is a building block to achieving peace. Though we agree with and support all of the goals, Zonta International is a strong proponent for Goal No. 5, Achieve gender equality and empower all women girls.
Gender equality is a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. We are working toward gender equality with all of our projects and programs, including eliminating obstetric fistula and reducing maternal mortality, morbidity and sexual violence against women while improving the health and socio-economic status of women and girls in Liberia, and creating opportunities for vulnerable and excluded girls to realize their rights to an education in a secure and protective environment in Madagascar. We are also committed to reducing early marriage and early pregnancy in Niger and working to create sustainable foundations for addressing the nexus between human trafficking and foreign labor migration of women and girls in Nepal.
Additionally, our three educational programs support extraordinary women in the fields of aerospace-related science and aerospace-related engineering, business and public affairs through our Amelia Earhart Fellowship, Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship and Young Women in Public Affairs Award.
“Let us all work together to help all human beings achieve dignity and equality; to build a greener planet; and to make sure no one is left behind,” said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a statement.
Without Goal No. 5, we cannot achieve peace in our world. Please join Zonta International in celebrating the International Day of Peace by becoming an advocate of the Sustainable Development Goals.
