A beacon for gender equality: Rita Süssmuth (1937-2026)

Zonta International honors the extraordinary life and work of Rita Süssmuth, one of the most prominent voices for democracy and gender equality in Germany, and a Zonta International Honorary Member since 1994.

For decades, Rita Süssmuth advocated with great clarity and perseverance for the social, political, and legal equality of women – often in the face of considerable resistance. She was among those who recognized early on that democracy remains incomplete without parity and the full protection of women's fundamental rights.

Rita Süssmuth started her career as a professor of education. As Federal Secretary for Youth, Family, Women, and Health (1985-1988), she placed women's issues at the center of the government‘s family policy, focusing on improving the compatibility of family, career, and social participation.

As President of the Bundestag (1988-1998), Germany’s federal parliament, and subsequently for the rest of her life, Rita Süssmuth remained a highly esteemed voice for gender equality and parity. She never tired of emphasizing that democratic structures require the equal participation of all.

“Rita Süssmuth did not take the easy route,” says Susanne von Bassewitz, Past International President of Zonta and Advocacy Officer of Zonta International Germany. "For her, women's rights were human rights. She always courageously defended her conviction, even when it was unpopular. For Zonta, she was both a role model and an important ally.”

Zonta recognized Rita Süssmuth as a committed supporter and critical thinker. Zonta International and particularly the Zonta clubs in Germany remember and honor an exceptional politician who encouraged many people to persistently advocate for gender equality and women’s equal participation in society.
