Remarkable social scientist, researcher and family violence practitioner shares her powerful story
Dr. Chay Brown was born and raised in Mparntwe/Alice Springs, Australia, and surrounding remote communities. She brings both lived experience and academic expertise to her work. Chay holds a Ph.D. in social sciences and Indigenous studies and a master’s degree in applied anthropology and participatory development from the Australian National University. Her research has shaped violence prevention policy and practice nationally and in the Northern Territory, including co-authoring Australia’s National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children and the NT’s Hopeful, Together, Strong prevention framework.
Chay’s work spans research, evaluation, policy and practice. She has led studies for ANROWS, UN Women and the Sexual Violence Research Initiative, and works closely with Aboriginal women’s organizations to co-design culturally safe responses to violence. She is the developer of the Prevent. Assist. Respond. training for frontline workers and has delivered programs in prisons, hospitals and remote communities.
Chay met with Lynne Foley OAM, host of the Remarkable Women, Powerful Stories podcast, to share how there is a time and place to be outraged by the outrageous. After working across the globe, she returned to her rural Australian home to bring a voice to those who are silenced by violence and light to the systems that shadow victims.
