Zonta inspires women and girls to rise as leaders and decision-makers
When we restrict the potential of future scholars, world leaders, inventors and pioneers, we not only limit their individual dreams and aspirations, but we also hinder the progress of society. This is what happens when the contributions of women and girls have gone unnoticed and uncredited for so long due to the simple fact that they are not men and they are not invited to take a well-deserved seat at the decision-making table.
One of the four leading causes that Zonta supports is increasing the number of women and girls in decision-making positions. We do this by empowering them to apply for positions and to speak up in a variety of forums from their school classrooms to the highest professional sectors. This empowerment enables them to become advocates for other women and girls and underrepresented groups, creating a ripple effect that paves the way for everyone to reach their full potential.
Through educational opportunities, mentorship connections and a network of support, Zonta has played a crucial role in empowering the next generation of female leaders. The programs, support and advocacy that Zonta provides are instrumental in helping women and girls navigate challenges, address their diverse needs, bolster their confidence and equip themselves with the tools necessary for success.
Recognizing and encouraging emerging women leaders
One such inspiring leader is Dr. Irit Idan, a distinguished three-time recipient of the Amelia Earhart Fellowship. Dr. Idan serves as a remarkable example of how women can shape the future of technology and leadership while also giving back to their communities.
“More than 30 years ago, I was a young Ph.D. student engrossed in my astrophysics thesis, and receiving the Amelia Earhart Fellowship was an incredible honor,” said Dr. Idan as she reflected on her journey. “Being the first Israeli woman to earn this prestigious medal, and later witnessing other women follow in my footsteps, fills me with pride to this day. Throughout my career, I have dedicated myself to encouraging women to pursue careers in STEM fields, starting from early education all the way through university and into the professional realm, particularly in the defense industry. There were many instances when I was the only woman in the room, and this experience underscored the importance of being a role model and actively helping others climb the ladder of success.”
Fostering confidence in women and girls is crucial, as it directly contributes to their increased participation in decision-making roles. When women and girls believe in their abilities and potential, they are more likely to seek leadership positions, contribute their unique perspectives and advocate for the needs and rights of their communities.
Justine Thébault-Weiser is a first-year student at McGill University in Canada, where she has quickly gained recognition in her community for her advocacy of gender equality initiatives. Through her efforts, she seeks to empower and inspire young women to consider pursuing careers in the often-underrepresented fields of STEM.
Recently, Justine was honored with the prestigious 2024 Zonta Young Women in Leadership Award. This accolade has not only bolstered her confidence but has also strengthened her resolve to continue her advocacy work. She believes that her efforts can create a positive impact and inspire others to join her in volunteering.
“Receiving this recognition is an incredible motivator for me to keep volunteering and supporting those in need,” Justine expressed. “I truly hope that my journey can inspire other young people to find their passion for helping others and to get involved in their communities.”
Expanding women’s and girls’ confidence leads to more women in decision-making
It is not only awardees like Justine and Dr. Idan who have found their confidence; Zonta members have experienced this transformation as well. Ansmarie Van Erp, a dedicated member since 1991, attributes her leadership development to Zonta.
“Zonta gave me the confidence to lead through the encouragement of an inspiring Zontian who invited me to join the club's board,” Ansmarie reflected. “Initially, I didn’t fully understand the role, but by learning from experienced Zontians, I was able to grasp Zonta's governance. This journey deepened my knowledge and solidified my confidence in managing responsibilities and making decisions for a shared purpose. My fellow Zontians have taught me that leadership is less about authority or being the boss and more about influence, collaboration and inspiring a shared mission.”
Now a member of the Zonta International Membership Committee and Club Creator Coordinator, Ansmarie utilizes what she has learned in her current roles while motivating new club officers and Zonta leaders to believe in themselves.
“Many new Zontians from emerging clubs display leadership potential and enthusiasm for learning about Zonta. They often bring fresh perspectives and energy, but may feel hesitant about taking on leadership roles,” Ansmarie has observed. “To motivate them, I focus on encouragement and mentorship, creating a supportive environment and providing opportunities for growth. By building their confidence and sense of purpose, they will feel more motivated to step into leadership roles.”
Empowered women empower other women
Numerous members and awardees of Zonta have experienced a profound sense of empowerment through their involvement with the organization, which has fostered a shared desire to uplift and empower others as well. One inspiring example is Belle Ronnfeldt, a former member of the Zonta Club of Brisbane East in Australia. After relocating to Dubai, UAE, she has taken the initiative to create the country’s very first Zonta club.
Reflecting on her experience, Belle expressed her mixed emotions upon leaving her Australian club: “I loved being involved with my Zonta club and was sad to leave them and the amazing work they were doing back in Australia. The friendships I built and the projects we undertook together deeply influenced my life.”
Initially, Belle had not considered the possibility of starting a Zonta club in Dubai. However, as she settled into her new environment and engaged with the community, she began to see the potential impact Zonta could have there. “The more I thought about it, the more it made sense to establish a club in Dubai,” she shared. “Zonta is a wonderfully powerful way to unite diverse groups of women, and I believe it can provide essential support for women and girls in this region. This initiative can transcend cultural boundaries and differences, creating a safe space for collaboration and growth. I’m excited about launching Zonta in Dubai and am grateful for the support from fellow Zontians at home and abroad. Their determination inspires me as we work to establish this new club.”
Belle’s unwavering determination to promote empowerment through Zonta embodies the transformative power of this organization. Zonta has not only empowered her but also inspired her to elevate those around her. Her efforts highlight how Zonta creates a supportive global community for women, enabling them to rise above challenges and make a positive social impact.
