Zonta International responds to U.S. withdrawal from multilateral institutions

As an organization with General Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and a long and successful history of partnership with the United Nations and its agencies, Zonta International expresses its deep concern and profound disappointment in the decision by the Government of the United States to withdraw from, or disengage with, a number of key international organizations, conventions, and treaties established under the auspices of the United Nations and the broader multilateral system.

This decision is not only a retreat from global responsibility, but the decision undermines the principles of multilateralism, international cooperation, and collective accountability enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. At a time of intersecting global crisis, including armed conflicts, climate change and growing inequality, the erosion of multilateral institutions weakens our collective ability to respond in a coordinated, effective way, and in a manner grounded in human rights and justice.

We wish to underscore in particular the profound importance of these international frameworks for the protection and advancement of the rights of women and girls worldwide. United Nations bodies, treaties, and conventions have been instrumental in establishing global norms on gender equality, combating gender-based violence, expanding access to education and health care, advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights, and ensuring the meaningful participation of women in peacebuilding and decision-making processes. Withdrawal from these mechanisms risks reversing hard-won gains and silencing the voices of those who rely most on international solidarity and accountability.

This is not acceptable. Gender equality and inclusion are not optional. They are fundamental to peace, security and sustainable development. Turning away from multilateral institutions sends a damaging message that these values can be compromised. They cannot.

Major powers bear a heightened responsibility to lead by example and uphold international commitments and systems that safeguard human rights and equality. Retreating from these obligations represents a missed opportunity for leadership at a time when the world needs it most.

Zonta International will not waver. The challenges of our time demand unity, cooperation, and sustained commitment.

Zonta International calls on the United States Government to reverse this decision immediately and reaffirm its leadership in advancing multilateral cooperation and gender equality. We urge all countries to lead with integrity and strengthen — rather than retreat from — the multilateral systems that remain indispensable to achieving gender equality, sustainable development, peace and justice for present and future generations. The future of peace, justice and equality depends on collective action, not unilateral retreat.

At Zonta International, we believe in the power of unity and purpose. Let us move forward together, recommitting to cooperation and equality. For women. For girls. For all. Because a better world is possible and Zonta International is building it.
