Zonta International joins safe sport program to combat gender-based violence in Thailand
In September 2024, Zonta International officially became a signatory of Thailand's Safe Sport Programme, marking a significant step in promoting safe, respectful sports environments for young athletes. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding was virtually attended by Zonta International UN Committee Chair Pamela Morgan and Zonta International UN Bangkok representative Chavali Osathanugrah. Minister Varawut Silpa-archa of the Ministry of Social Development and his wife, Dr. Suwanna, were also present at the ceremony.
The Safe Sport Programme aligns with the Constitutional Act of the Kingdom of Thailand, ensuring that Thai youth in sports are afforded the protection they deserve. This initiative emphasizes human justice and gender respect, promoting an environment free from sexual harassment or violence, where both women and men can safely participate and train.
The program supports the constitutional principle that “all persons are equal before the law, and shall have rights and liberties, and be protected equally under the law.” It reinforces that men and women shall enjoy equal rights in all areas, including sports, furthering Zonta International’s mission to promote gender equality and protect human rights.
