Zonta clubs in Akureyri acknowledge women refugees on International Women's Day

In celebration of International Women's Day, Zonta clubs in Akureyri, Iceland, and the Soroptimist Club of Akureyri organized their annual lunch event. This year, they invited two impressive women to speak about the conditions of women who live in areas of the world where there are conflicts and wars, and the situation of women who have to flee their homeland with their families and settle in Iceland and about the difficulties that follow being in this position.

The clubs managed to draw attention to women living in areas of the world with conflicts and wars and the situation of refugee women here in Iceland. Participation in the meeting was outstanding, and the media had news and pictures. The women who gave speeches were interviewed.

The clubs know it is crucial to inform and discuss the conditions of women who live in areas in the world where there is conflict and war and the conditions of women in Iceland who come here for these reasons to increase awareness of how we as a society can assist women who live in these conditions. In the world, millions of women live in terrible conditions due to conflicts and wars, such as in Gaza, Palestine, Ukraine and Afghanistan, to name a few examples. They cannot sit by and watch this happen.
