An educational first for the Zonta Club of Bundaberg Inc on International Women's Week

After 18 months of planning between the Zonta Club of Bundaberg Inc, Australia, and the Wide Bay TAFE's (Technical and Further Education) Business Hospitality and Language Facility, the partnership produced the Zonta Club of Bundaberg's TAFE Bursary award and awarded its first recipient, Hanna Broughton, on International Women's Week.

The thoughts behind the inspiration and instigation of the award stemmed from the club's wish to support women and girls throughout varied levels of education studies in the Bundaberg Region. Their local educational award prizes cover primary schools, high schools and TAFE and CQU.

While many deserving students applied for the award, Hannah, a second-year student studying Certificate III in Commercial Cookery at the TAFE Queensland Bundaberg campus, was the standout recipient. In her own words, Hannah is not afraid of hard work and wants to show other young women that they can pursue their dreams and do amazing things no matter how many obstacles they face.

Club President Le-Anne Allan was especially proud to introduce the club's award. The Bundaberg Campus of TAFE has always formed an intrinsic part of Le-Anne's educational journey. She sees the campus as a vital part of the fantastic local educational opportunities in the Bundaberg region.

"Education of our local women and girls is at the core of our mission to saying yes to gender equality, and Zonta Says No to Gender-Based Violence in the Bundaberg Region," says Le-Anne.

The award serves to recognize a female TAFE student committed to further education, training and employment in a non-traditionally female field of endeavor. The cash prize of $500 will support the recipient in her studies by covering some of the costs associated with the course. It will also offer a complimentary Zonta Club of Bundaberg membership for one year.
