Zonta Club of Armidale Inc participates in Clean Up Australia Day and more

In celebration of Clean Up Australia Day and International Women's Day, the Zonta Club of Armidale Inc. participated in numerous actions to rehabilitate the local environment and empower women and girls in their community.

Clean Up Australia Day
On Clean Up Australia Day, the club joined the Armidale Urban Rivercare Group and other community members to plant more than 830 grasses and shrubs to rehabilitate the local creek.

This stage of the "Weedy Wasteland to Wildlife Wetland" project focuses on removing exotic woody weeds, installing a wetland to filter the creek water and replanting riparian areas with local indigenous native plants. The club lives in New England, New South Wales, as early European settlers thought the landscape and climate reminiscent of their homeland. They planted many European trees, such as willows, which, while pretty, particularly in autumn, have affected the water table and pushed out native species.

This enjoyable Zonta Says NOW activity led to a greener and cleaner environment in the local area.

International Women's Day
The club invited Josie O-Baioll, its 2023 Young Women in Public Affairs Awardee, to be one of the Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress panelists.

Josie is a self-described feminist, musician and activist. She recently impressed a large gathering at the headline New South Wales Government Women's Week event, which was jointly hosted by the club and other non-profit women's organizations. Josie demonstrated why young women's voices should be heard at the event.

The panel was also made up of:

  • The Honorable Josie Harrison, MP, is the local minister for women.
  • Tiffany Johnston served as the indigenous health liaison.
  • Sew Emojong served as the panel moderator. She is a talented and assertive young woman who facilitated the club's past advocacy workshop during the 2023 Zonta Says NO campaign.
