Zonta Club of Kuopio I celebrates 55th anniversary
The Zonta Club of Kuopio I, Finland, celebrated its 55th anniversary on 11 May 2026, marking the same date the club received its charter 55 years ago.
As members reflected on the club's history, they celebrated decades of service supporting women and girls in their community. Over the years, the club has provided awards and educational support to young students and women, particularly refugees seeking opportunities to pursue professional studies.
The club also highlighted its long-standing support of vulnerable women and families. This year, District 20 signed a 10-year cooperation agreement with the Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters. In Kuopio, club members had already been supporting their local shelter through fundraising and resource collection efforts prior to the nationwide partnership.
Environmental stewardship has also been a focus of the club's work. To raise awareness about climate change and create a lasting legacy for future generations, members established the "Girls' Forest" by planting spruce trees on land owned by a forest company.
The club's public awareness campaign, "Wonderful Dating," invited young people to share their thoughts on safe and respectful relationships. Their reflections were later displayed as posters at the local library to encourage community dialogue.
Another longstanding initiative is the club's twice-yearly charity shop, organized in partnership with a local International Baccalaureate college. The events feature clothing, books, household goods, design products and artwork. In recent years, Ukrainian refugees have participated by operating a café serving traditional cakes. Proceeds support local and international awards, while refugee participants and students use their earnings to support their own initiatives.
The anniversary celebration served as an opportunity to honor the club's legacy of service, advocacy and community engagement while looking ahead to future efforts to build a better world for women and girls.
