Zonta Club of Kauai's Denim Day advocacy

On 30 April, the Zonta Club of Kauai, HI, USA, marked Denim Day with a Mayor's Proclamation event in collaboration with the Kauai County Committee on the Status of Women and YWCA Kauai, uniting the community to raise awareness about sexual violence and promote respect and safety for women and girls.

Held in support of the global Denim Day campaign, the event featured powerful messages from local leaders and advocates. Club President Regina Carvalho, Committee Chair Lori Barrett and YWCA Executive Director Cheryl Lum each delivered remarks emphasizing the importance of education, awareness and advocacy in ending gender-based violence.

Mayor Derek Kawakami and Dana Hazelton, Governor Josh Green’s representative for Kauai, also spoke, urging the community to challenge harmful behaviors and teach young boys respect and nonviolence toward women and girls.

Eleven members of the Zonta Club joined approximately 60 attendees, all wearing denim in solidarity. The event highlighted the shared commitment across civic and nonprofit sectors to support survivors and advocate for cultural change.
