Zonta Club of Kathmandu empowers local women facing economic issues

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many women migrant workers had to return to Nepal after losing their jobs. In addition, a lack of income led to mental health issues and domestic violence concerns at home.

With Women on Wheels, the Zonta Club of Kathmandu, Nepal, partnered with a local NGO to identify women in need. With the support of Everest Bank, they bought vegetable and fruit carts for 12 women. The women were trained on health and hygiene, financial literacy and basic women rights in the Nepalese constitution. With the training and carts of their own, club members could sense how empowered these women felt.

These women have now turned into entrepreneurs and are making their own earnings through selling vegetables, popcorn, fruit and roasted corn with the carts.
