Zonta Club of Kathmandu provides literacy classes

The Zonta Club of Kathmandu, Nepal, started a series of literacy courses for a group of 30-50 women in various remote areas.

Many of the students were married at a very young age, some as young as 10-years-old, and most of them were denied access to education. Once married, the only world they know is the four walls of their house, and almost all of them do not know how to write their names.

The club partnered with local teachers to teach the women basic reading and writing. When the women meet for class, they can share and learn from each other's issues. The courses also provide a safe space for them to be themselves and reaffirm that they're more than just wives or mothers.

Since starting the literacy courses, the students have a newfound confidence in themselves.
