Zonta Club of Taipei II President Ching-Hui Shih poses with recipients of the 2020 Lu Soong You-tze Scholarship

Zonta Club of Taipei II gives scholarships to 15 female university students

Zonta Club of Taipei II, Taiwan, held its 2020 Lu Soong You-Tze Scholarship awarding ceremony on 19 December to recognize 15 university students for their distinguished academic performance and volunteer work.

This is the fourth year of the scholarship program. The awards are given in collaboration with the Excellent Long-Established University Consortium of Taiwan (ELECT), which comprises 12 universities in northern and central parts of the country.

Recipients are selected by the Zonta Club of Taipei II’s scholarship committee from the lists of students recommended by each ELECT member. The schools also send staff representatives to the awarding ceremonies. This year, the scholarship was also given to Chu En-le, who obtained high scholastic scores in business management at Shih Chien University, despite her physical conditions which are impaired with Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

The Zonta Club of Taipei II tries to provide a platform for students to grow and develop in their specialized academic fields and to join efforts engaging in service projects. Meanwhile, the club nurtures potential future Zonta members. Most of the members from the New Dawn Golden Z Club, formed last month under the Zonta club’s sponsorship, are former recipients of the scholarship.

The awards are made my possible by the generous donation of US$100,000 from the late Mrs. Lu Soong You-Tze, a philanthropist and mother of club member Lu Kwang-Yen. Lu Soong You-Tze died three years ago at the age of 98 and was a frequent donor to the Zonta Club of Taipei II’s charity and service programs. She had also made large donations to several universities and to the Alliance Cultural Foundation which empowers underprivileged students in remote areas in eastern Taiwan.
